If you miss your regularly scheduled laboratory and need to schedule a time to make it up, there are several considerations to keep in mind.

1.    The table below shows the normal registration numbers (and TA's) for each of the lab sections. Note that these numbers can change from week to week; we regularly find that for each experiment 3-8 students will miss one lab and attend another. So, while you should use the table below as a guide, you must contact Dr. Driscoll (by an e-mail with a cc to your TA) for confirmation of a slot. You may, if you wish, show up for a full lab on the chance that someone will miss it without warning, but in this case you should also be prepared to go away and attend another section.

2.    Failure to make up even a single lab will result in a dramatic lowering of your lab grade (since there are only seven labs in the semester).

3.    When you contact Dr. Driscoll diana dot driscoll at case dot edu to request a makeup lab, please tell her which courses (PHYS115, 121 or 123) and which labs (course and section number) you are able to switch TO. Please also provide a reason for your absence; you don't have to divulge any personal information, but we like to know if your absence is due, for example, to family issues, extracurricular activities, religious holidays, etc.

4.     As a courtesy to your lab partner, when you know you will miss a lab, try to contact him or her so that she or he doesn't waste precious time waiting for you to arrive.

5.     Your temporary TA may tell you to do things one way, but your regular TA, who will still grade your work, may grade on a different basis. We cannot fix such problems, you will simply have to suffer the consequences.

6.     Finally, make arrangements for a make-up as early as possible. If you know in advance that you will miss a lab, arrange for a make-up in advance. Waiting until the last day of labs to make arrangements may leave you out of luck (see item 3 above). Students participating in athletic, artistic and other events throughout the session should rearrange labs for the entire session as early as possible, the schedules for such events are usually set well in advance. We will be liberal in allowing makeup's for students who provide advance warning but if you ask for a makeup after the fact, we expect you to provide a formal excuse (doctor's note, email from the dean, etc.)

7.    If you cannot make up a lab during the 2-week period the lab equipment is set out, you have an opportunity to make up a single lab at the end of the semester, on the first Reading Day.  The lab will be from 9-12 in the morning, and you have until 6 pm on the same day to submit any worksheets or lab reports associated with that particular lab to your TA’s mailbox and in the case of a full lab report to Canvas/TurnItIn as well.
